Philip, a synodical deacon in the ELCA Metropolitan New York synod, is a retired communicator for American Baptist Churches USA, the U.S. Conference for the World Council of Churches, the U.S. National Council of Churches, and two Philadelphia area daily newspapers. He and his spouse, the Rev. Dr. Martha M. Cruz, are the parents of six adults and are members of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rye Brook, N.Y. They live in Port Chester, N.Y.

    Let’s not be naive. America is a democratic republic. It is a government by, of and for the people.
    It is easy to simply place blame on a President or other high ranking government officials.

    Nay rather, the bloods of those innocents belong on all those who supported those wars through their vote, to the mothers and fathers who willingly allowed their sons to be drafted (legally considered minors, not old enough to vote, not even able to order a beer). Also the young men themselves who willingly marched off to battle like a herd of cattle being driven to the slaughterhouse.

    The real question is, when is it incumbent upon us as individuals to say no and resist orders which according to our religious beliefs are immoral, unethical, and inhuman?

    Our faith, requires that we must stand up to evil, just as the holy men of antiquity, the Apostles and all those martyred throughout history.

    If it means loss of job (as those workers refusing the jab) several years ago, exile, jail, or even death, it is our duty to obey the Supreme King, Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
