Let’s be real. Peoples not of white Western European descent were not truly free for another 100 years. Even today in the 21st Century there is racism, discrimination, and prejudices against those of different ethnicities, cultures, religions, and sexual orientations.

It is naive to believe that making a proclamation or putting pen to paper in a declaration can change the plight of a subjugated people.

Black folk were subjected to segregation, ostracized from society, unable to get work (except as maids, porters, janitors, etc.), for another century and still face barriers today.

In your little village of Port Chester, my classmates when stating that they thought slavery and segregation were “not right,” were met with the response from the teacher that the “colored people” were brute savages in Africa, cannibalizing each other. She stated that slavery and segregation were a “good” thing in “civilizing” these barbaric folk. Elders, parents, and respected members of the community echoed the sentiment that the “colored folk” were lazy, unwilling to work, and their children uninterested in education.

Many civil rights and social justice activists faced violence, jail, and even assassination.

Freedom, liberation, and social justice does not result from edicts, proclamations, nor declarations. It begins with how the next generation is taught by word and deed from their parents, teachers, and civil, religious, and political authorities.

Fallen mankind in his lust for power, greed, envy, and wrath will never create a utopian society. Our only hope is in the return of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and the establishment of His Kingdom.

    Shalom
