August 6th is a terrible date for the church to celebrate the transfiguration. August 6th is inexorably linked in the mind of many folks to the day the face of the earth was transfigured into a scene of death for hundreds of thousands of human beings. It seems the creators of the atomic bomb seemed to have had a sick sense of humor and demonic impulse in conducting the “Trinity” test at “Jornada del Muerto” and then detonating the device on “Transfiguration Day.” Why does the Lutheran church find it necessary to follow a date arbitrarily set by the Catholic Pope Callixtus III.
