Philip, a synodical deacon in the ELCA Metropolitan New York synod, is a retired communicator for American Baptist Churches USA, the U.S. Conference for the World Council of Churches, the U.S. National Council of Churches, and two Philadelphia area daily newspapers. He and his spouse, the Rev. Dr. Martha M. Cruz, are the parents of six adults and are members of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rye Brook, N.Y. They live in Port Chester, N.Y.

    Why is it that in this election, folks do not extol the virtues and positive aspects of their choice for candidate? They instead focus on incessantly trashing, besmirching, and disparaging their political opponent.

    This childish mudslinging is disgusting, especially coming from those aligning themselves with the religious community.

    Mr. Jenks, why can you not take the high road and delineate the positive aspects of your candidate’s character and platform?

    Personally, I adhere to the philosophy of separation of church and state.

    I do not want government chiming in on my religion and vice versa.
