Philip, a synodical deacon in the ELCA Metropolitan New York synod, is a retired communicator for American Baptist Churches USA, the U.S. Conference for the World Council of Churches, the U.S. National Council of Churches, and two Philadelphia area daily newspapers. He and his spouse, the Rev. Dr. Martha M. Cruz, are the parents of six adults and are members of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rye Brook, N.Y. They live in Port Chester, N.Y.

    Matthew 5:1 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.
    Mr. Jenks, your pictorial shows Jesus standing, also you remove the phrase “when he sat.” You often alter Biblical passages or omit relevant detail which alters its affect on the reader.
    Preachers today like to speak from a position of power, in a pulpit or behind a lectern. This displays a sense of superiority and in authority over the audience.
    Jesus, contrariwise, preaches from a seated position conveying a sense of humility, intimacy, and being equal to the listener.
